Eco-Tourism:
Pro-Poor Tourism (PPT) is defined as tourism that generates net benefits for the poor. Benefits may be economic, but they may also be social, environmental or cultural. Pro-poor tourism is not a specific product or sector of tourism, but an approach to the industry.
WHAT we are: SHARE offers coaching, training, monitoring & evaluation as well as certification services for all actors in the tourism sector aspiring towards a more sustainable industry. Consistent with the three pillars of sustainable development as well as responsible tourism, STAR assists tourism agencies, companies, and supportive governmental entities in redesigning their practices to ensure a more equitable, stable, and intersectional industry.
WHO we are: SHARE staff is comprised of industry professionals from multiple sectors including but not limited to tourism, international development, higher education, political advocacy, technology transfer, and environmental activism. Collectively we have over a century of experience at the nexus of sustainable development and responsible tourism spanning six continents and nearly 80 countries.
WHERE we are: Every neighborhood and nation that receives visitors is where we can operate. We work with and advise multinational hotel chains and family-owned eco-lodges alike. From local custodial unions to national ministries of tourism, we offer a suite of services training and eventually certifying industry professionals in the principles and practices of sustainable tourism.
HOW we do this: Our team provides comprehensive assessments of a client’s socio-cultural, economic, political, environmental, and intergenerational sustainability using a proprietary multidimensional index. Relevant staff and leadership are then trained on the principles of sustainable tourism and an action plan then drawn up for the client to meet clearly established benchmarks. The first round of SHARE certification is then complete, and once the benchmarks have been met, the rating can be reevaluated each year. The goal is to render the entire industry more sustainable, and each client becomes part of a global network of mutually supportive hotels, ministries, restaurants etc. SHARE then acts as a central; node referring clients to each other with the full weight of certain key influencers behind them. We also operate a dynamic and comprehensive modern social media campaign to support this endeavor.
WHY we do this: Worth over $9 trillion annually and comprising 11% of both the global GDP as well as the global workforce, Tourism is the largest single economic sector on earth. Essential to its rapid growth and expansion is that the (mis)management of this industry does not result in destroying the very destination sites and communities originally intended to benefit from it. Preserving our common heritage and shared natural world for future generations is a fundamental necessity. We are dedicated to the protection of our planet’s cultural and biological diversity, and the tourism industry is uniquely positioned to provide the funding and popular support to do so.
